Tribeca’s Unique Florist/Coffee Shop

Posted by Wei Min Tan on September 2, 2020

My wife and I stumbled upon Cafe Atelier last week while walking in our neighborhood, Tribeca, looking for a coffee shop with outdoor seating.  Upon entering, we realize Cafe Atelier has a sister flower business, Darling Moon Flower, in the same location.  Together, the shop sells very elegantly designed flowers while serving quality coffee and desserts.

What an amazing concept.  There were two small tables outside where we sipped coffee.  The staff was friendly, the decor was nice.  Everything was meant to be where they were.  The kind of subtle yet well-planned ambiance you find at the best places.   I had to write about the shop, and below is the interview with Alice Kil, the owner.

Tell us about the florist/coffee shop concept

I am a florist who studied Korean and French flower design.  Darling Moon is the product of these combined styles.

Previously, I worked in a Manhattan  flower shop and then became a wedding florist.  I became a Wedding Master with Zita Elze in the U.K.  I had a studio in Midtown teaching floral arrangement classes.  While a florist, I took a second job as a barista at a coffee shop.  These experiences laid the groundwork for my florist/coffee shop today.

How did you start Darling Moon / Cafe Atelier?

After 10 years, I looked to start my own floral shop.  I met someone with a shop in Tribeca who asked if I wanted to take over the space.  That was how Darling Moon Flower / Cafe Atelier was born.  We opened more than a year ago, in June 2019.  Our shop sells flowers, coffee and desserts.

Wedding flowers

What kinds of flowers does Darling Moon focus on?

We focus on high end cut flowers for weddings, parties and commercial spaces.

Wedding arrangements include bouquets and arches.  Flowers is an excellent way to remember the special occasion.  The arrangements we do are bespoke.  We also plan parties – bridal parties, birthdays, private parties.  For commercial spaces like restaurants and creative companies, we can plan a space and provide weekly floral arrangements.  Flowers are the perfect backdrop to liven up a space.

Recently, we expanded our offerings to include cactus, orchids and succulent plants.

Has Covid affected business?

Yes, all weddings have been canceled due to social distancing and quarantine requirements.   Within our Tribeca community, many of our local Tribeca customers left New York City during this time.  We are hopeful normalcy will resume soon.  Tribeca is a lot more vibrant now compared to a few months ago during the peak of the pandemic.
